legends after all

Sleeping With Sirens.

Welcome back!

The scene has felt a little quiet without vocalist Kellin Quinn’s tenor crooning.

The band has released “Legends,” the first single from the upcoming album “Gossip” (set for release on September 22). Upon first listen, the track is… well?… simple.

Legends – Sleeping With Sirens (Lyrics)

We could be legends, we could be legends
We could be legends, we could be legends
We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-ohDo you remember being young
The world in our hands, your heart in a song
Do you remember being young
(Remember, remember)
Nothing’s ever what it seems
Forget who you are, forget how to dream
I think it’s time that we believe
(Remember, remember)

We could be wild and we could be free
We can be anything in life we wanna be
We could move mountains, we can break walls
We can stand tall enough to fight and never fall

We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all

Do you remember growing up
Standing all alone, your back to the sun
Do you remember growing up
(Remember, remember)
Tell me I was gonna be
If we win or lose wear your heart on your sleeve
I think it’s time that we believe
(Remember, remember)

We could be wild and we could be free
We can be anything in life we wanna be
We could move mountains, we can break walls
We can stand tall enough to fight and never fall

We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all
We could be legends, we could be legends
We could be legends after all
We could be legends, we could be legends

Stand up and shout it out if you want it
(Remember, remember)
Reach out and touch the sky ’cause you got it
We’ll be here forever
Stand up and shout it out if you want it
(Remember, remember)
Reach out and touch the sky ’cause you got it
We’ll be here forever

We could be wild, we could be free
We can be anything in life we wanna be
We could move mountains, we can break walls
We can stand tall enough to fight and never fall

We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all
Hey woah-oh-oh
We could be legends after all

Stand up and shout it out if you want it
(Remember)
Reach out and touch the sky ’cause you got it
We’ll be here forever

Lyrically, “Legends” is rather weak and repetitive (‘remember’ is sang 17 times in the three-and-a-half minute track). While it holds an uplifting message, it’s one that is often highlighted. Did the world really need another ‘you can do anything’ pop song?

Maybe it did.

Because “Legends” was, soon after its release, announced as the official song of the U.S. Olympic Team.

Does it make sense yet?

Let me help you.

“Legends” is a pop fueled track with generic lyrics about being wild, free, and massively successful because it was manufactured to be acceptable to represent the United States as a whole. Of course it isn’t SWS’ best piece of work. Why would it be? It only has to be catchy enough to become an earworm.

Success.

I’ve sang the word ‘remember’ more in the past 24 hours than I have in my entire life.

So maybe it’s not the best song you’ve ever heard. It’s not supposed to be. They “like it loud,” after all. This single was likely not meant to represent the entirety of “Gossip.”

Even if it does represent the upcoming record, that may not be such a bad thing. The track is slightly reminiscent to Fall Out Boy’s “Champion” in its pop nature and lyricism (although Fall Out’s single was indisputably better written and composed). The latter has nearly two million views on YouTube. The point? Change attracts attention. Attention brings new fans.

The verdict?

While it’s obviously weak in ways the the average SWS song is not, “Legends” is an undeniably catchy track that’s sure to bring new listeners.

Not a bad move, guys.

Some may call it ‘legendary.’
